The Chef’s Battle of the Baskets culinary competition sponsored by Shop Rite and Chef’s Solutions LLC recently took place on February 9th at the Franklin Terrace in Troy. The event featured 3 local chefs, 3 celebrity judges and 12 tasting tables. The over 100 attendees were able to sample from multiple tasting tables from area restaurants and establishments, including: Francesca’s, Franklin Terrace, Hembold’s Hotdog, Hilton Garden Inn Troy, LoPorto’s, Olivia’s BBQ, Shop Rite, The Hungry Fish Cafe and Terry’s Kitchen.
The competing chefs raced against the clock to prepare an appetizer, an entrée and a dessert using only the mystery items supplied to them in their Shop Rite donated baskets. Judges voted on the dishes based on complexity, creativity, taste, execution and presentation. The three participating chefs included Jackie Baldwin of On Site Services Solutions/Sodexo Education, Michael Niccoli of the Century House and our very own Jeremy Kane of BBL Hospitality. Those judging the competition were Times Union Senior Writer Steve Barnes, FLY 92.3 Radio DJ Shawn Gillie and Samaritan Hospital Oncologist Dr. Sergio Biguzzi. After a hard fought culinary battle, the judges chose Jeremy Kane as this year’s winner!
The competition raised over $10,000 for the “One Less Thing” fund to help patients at the Samaritan Hospital Cancer Treatment Center. This money will help those patients who cannot afford the lifesaving treatments they need, such as co-pays, medications, nutritional therapy and psychosocial counseling. The funds will also help patients with their everyday needs, such as food or a toy for a child to play with while his/her parent is receiving treatment.
Congratulations Jeremy, another delicious victory!
